Sweetwater High School's Agricultural Science Teacher Katy Harkey shared news about  FFA and the final contests of the year:

On Tuesday, April 18th, the Sweetwater FFA Land Judging team (Trey Harvey, Stephen May, Jay Lomas, Creed Kinsey), Homesite Evaluation team (Andrew Smith, Austin Wedin, Bobby Soto), and Milk Quality and Products team (Morgan Whitley, Blake Young, Sage Nelsen, Shelby Sutton) traveled to Tarleton State University in Stephenville for their State contest. All three teams did an excellent job representing Sweetwater! The Milk Quality and Products team placed in the Top 10 of the State contest, which is extremely competitive!

The following Saturday, April 20th, the Sweetwater FFA Agronomy Judging Team (Blake Young, Alyssa Soles, Jeanne Chapman), Wool Judging Team (Kyle Lambert, Cameryn Jones, Ty Crain, Marc Butler), and Cotton Classing Team (Mackensey Hayes, Cody Chapman, Morgan Whitley, Andrew Smith), all traveled to Texas Tech University in Lubbock for their State Contests. All teams did a great job. The Cotton Classing Team brought home the State Champion Banner! Mackensey was High Point Individual, and Andrew was the 7th Place Individual. They are very excited about their great achievement! Texas is an extremely competitive state, as you all well know, and FFA Judging contests are absolutely no exception! This is a huge accomplishment for these kids!

On Friday, May 3rd, the Sweetwater FFA Floriculture Judging Team traveled to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville for their State Contest. State Qualifying Team members were Morgan Browning, Shelby Cason, Maty Montgomery, and Keyli Turner. Morgan Whitley and Cody Chapman competed at State as alternates for Maty and Keyli, who had a softball playoff game on the same day.  Sweetwater FFA's Farm Business Management Team (Cody Chapman, Leah Warren, Colton Scott) also qualified for State Contest, but scratched in order to compete on their other State Qualifying Teams.

The next day, Saturday, May 4th, the Sweetwater FFA Meats Judging Team (Kyle Lambert, Sean Morrow, Mackensey Hayes, Cody Chapman), along with the Poultry Judging Team (Andrew Smith, Austin Wedin, Leah Warren, Colton Scott) competed in their State Contest at Texas A&M University in College Station. The Meats Team finished in the Top 5! Again, this is a huge accomplishment for these students, as the Meats contest is one of the most competitive events in the state!

That wraps up our State Contest season, but we're not done with our FFA year yet! Last night we took Sweetwater FFA members to Westbrook for the Lone Wolf District FFA Spring Meeting and Banquet. At the meeting, Stephen May and Caroline Brennan ran for 2013-2014 District Officer positions. Caroline was voted President, and Stephen was voted Vice President by their fellow District FFA members. They will serve the Lone Wolf District FFA as officers for the upcoming school year! Sean Morrow and Cameryn Jones retired from their 2012-2013 District Officer posts as Reporter and Student Advisor, respectively. Kyle Lambert, who is finishing up his year of service as the Area II FFA First Vice President, will officially represent the Sweetwater FFA Chapter and the Lone Wolf FFA District as our State Officer Candidate at the Area II FFA Convention that is coming up on Friday, May 17th. Please wish Kyle luck and encourage him, as being voted State Officer is one of the highest honors a Texas FFA Member can receive, and one of the toughest positions to attain!

As you can see, we are celebrating some huge student success over at the Sweetwater FFA Chapter! If you see any of these students, please congratulate them on their achievements! They have worked very hard this year, and deserve the recognition! Mr. Rains and I are proud of our FFA members who have proven themselves to be great leaders and competitors at the Chapter, District, Area and State levels!
