SISD's Sharrie Lyon, certified teacher of the visually impaired, was presented with the Julia L. Young Award in Austin by the Texas Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired. This prestigious award is in honor of Julia L. Young, who provided leadership in the development of the visually handicapped children’s program of the Texas commission for the Blind. The award is presented annually to an individual who has done outstanding work with visually impaired children in Texas.
Sharrie is employed by West Central Texas Shared Services Arrangement (WCTSSA) and has an office in the Sweetwater ISD Administration Building. She works with visually impaired students who are in the school districts served by WCTSSA. Sharrie provides direct instruction to eligible students, plans special trips, works closely with both staff members and parents, and according to Director Scarlett Whitteker, "consistently goes above and beyond every day."
