Sweetwater High School Band Receives Top Honors in Recent UIL Competition

The Sweetwater High School Might Mustang Band received a Division 1 Award for their performance at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Marching Competition on Monday, October 19, 2015 at Wylie Stadium in Abilene.

The band played it's award winning halftime show "A Gathering of Knights," composed by Barry Hurt. "We've been working on perfecting our performance since last August," said Drum Major Mary Morris.

This year, members from the SHS Varsity Football and Junior Varsity and Varsity Volleyball teams went to Abilene to observe the show and root for the band.  "It was special," said Drum Major Ashely Parker.  "Having a big cheering squad made a statement to the crowd that our band is a big part of our campus that helps make our school premier."

Football and Volleyball coaches requested to attend the event because they are thankful of the support that the band shows each week when they hit the field and court.  This year, the drumline has been performing at the varsity volleyball games.

UIL rules stipulate that 4A and 6A schools cannot advance this year to state competitions. With a Division 1 UIL rating next year, the Sweetwater High School Band would advance to the next level in the State Championship Marching Band Competition.
