SHS FCCLA Brings Distracted Driving Awareness to SISD

The Sweetwater High School FCCLA chapter hosted an assembly on distracted driving on November 27th. Trooper Biddle with the Department of Public Safety was the presenter. Distracted driving is the number one killer of teens between the ages of 16-18. FCCLA members felt that this was an issue that needed to be addressed. After the assembly, students were asked to take the pledge to not text and drive. Each student that took the pledge received an arm band that read "Texting and Driving... IT CAN WAIT". Alyssa Villanueva, Payton Moore, and Marisa Moncada felt that spreading awareness of distracted driving and the dangers could help reduce the risk in our area. These three FCCLA members are responsible for organizing and hosting this assembly.

The USDA's Mandi Ligon Visits Southeast Elementary Students

From Southeast students:

Mandi Ligon from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service visited Mrs. Houston's first grade class.  She brought soil from Maryneal, Roscoe, and Sweetwater as well as a pure clay that she had.  She told our class about what conservation was, and how it takes 500 years to make one inch of soil on the ground.  She also told us the difference between "Dirty Dirt" and "Super Soil."  She showed us how the clay did not allow water to pass through it and how most of our "tanks" are made on the clay.  She told us that we can trace everything we eat back to the soil, except FISH!  We enjoyed having her in our classroom VERY much!  She even let us play in the mud!!!
