Benefits & Insurance
  • Group health insurance coverage is provided through TRS-ActiveCare, the statewide public school employee health insurance program. Sweetwater ISD contributes $275 per month to each employee’s insurance premiums. Employees eligible for health insurance coverage include employees who are active, contributing TRS members, employees who are not contributing TRS members, and who are employed for 10 or more regularly scheduled hours per week.
  • At their own expense, employees may enroll in supplemental insurance programs for health, dental, life, cancer, disability, vision insurance, etc. Premiums for these programs can be paid by payroll deduction. SISD pays for a $10,000  Life Insurance policy for every employee. Each employee is automatically eligible for the life insurance policy upon employment, and must designate a beneficiary when completing the employment process.
  • Employees may be eligible to participate in the Cafeteria Plan (Section 125) and, under IRS regulations, must either accept or reject this benefit. This plan enables eligible employees to pay certain insurance premiums on a pretax basis (i.e., disability, accidental death and dismemberment, cancer and dread disease, dental, and additional term life insurance). A third-party administrator handles employee claims made on these accounts. New employees must accept or reject this benefit during their first month of employment. All employees must accept or reject this benefit on an annual basis and during the specified time period.

  • The insurance plan year is from September 1 through August 31. Current employees can make changes in their insurance coverage during open enrollment each year or when they experience a qualifying event (e.g., marriage, divorce, birth). Open Enrollment will be passive for all existing employees. This means you only need to log in if you need to make changes to your Benefits Portal for the new school year. All current benefit elections will roll from the current year to the new plan year. New employees must complete enrollment forms within the first 30 days of employment. TRS retirees who are enrolled in TRS-Care (retiree health insurance program) are not eligible to participate in TRS-ActiveCare. 

    •  Current employees complete your enrollment before August 23, 2021. If you are a new employee, you must complete your enrollment within 30 days from your Date of Hire.

    • All Passwords have been set to the default. Please follow the login instructions listed for you on the login page.

    • Please be sure to enter in all spouse and dependent Date of Births and Social Security numbers into the system even if you are not covering them on your insurance. This is per the Affordable Care Act and must be completed.

  • The district, in accordance with state law, provides workers’ compensation benefits to employees who suffer a work-related illness or are injured on the job. The district has workers’ compensation coverage from Texas Association of School Boards, effective September 1 of the current year. Benefits help pay for medical treatment and make up for part of the income lost while recovering. Specific benefits are prescribed by law depending on the circumstances of each case.All work-related accidents or injuries should be reported immediately to the business office. Employees who are unable to work because of a work-related injury will be notified of their rights and responsibilities under the Texas Labor Code. See Workers’ Compensation Benefits, page 27 for information on use of paid leave for such absences.
  • Employees who have been laid off or terminated through no fault of their own may be eligible for unemployment compensation benefits. Employees are not eligible to collect unemployment benefits during regularly scheduled breaks in the school year or the summer months if they have employment contracts or reasonable assurance of returning to service. Employees with questions about unemployment benefits should contact the HR Department.
  • All personnel employed on a regular basis for at least four and one-half months are members of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS). Substitutes not receiving TRS service retirement benefits who work at least 90 days a year are eligible to purchase a year of creditable service in TRS. TRS provides members with an annual statement of their account showing all deposits and the total account balance for the year ending August 31, as well as an estimate of their retirement benefits. Employees who plan to retire under TRS should notify Kathryn James in HR as soon as possible.   • Sweetwater ISD provides daycare services for all staff. Children must be 8 weeks old to attend the daycare. The daycare operates from 7:20am - 4:30pm. Staff are required to provide diapers, formula and/or meals, a change of clothes, and a pillow and/or blanket. Meals can be purchased through the cafeteria ($2.25 for breakfast & $4.00 for lunch).

  • For staff children in grades Kindergarten and above a staff bus will be provided at the end of the day to drop off your children at your campus. If you are planning to use the staff bus at the end of the day, please inform the campus that your child is enrolled.
  • The district provides all personnel a complimentary membership to the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital fitness center.
